Why Are You Single?

Asking a single person why they are still single is doubly insulting. It suggests there is something wrong with being single, something the single person has to answer for, and the “still” part implies that, ultimately, just about everyone will marry; when in fact they don’t.

Also the question is one of those questions people think will be a simple, three-to-five-word answer, but really won’t be.

I have no idea how to handle the question.

At times being single is running barefoot through a field in a sundress with birds chirping. Other times, it‘s waking up in an empty bed only to realize that the apocalypse happened overnight, I somehow survived and now I must live as the only remaining human on earth. Forever alone.
