I'm currently watching I Am Vanessa Guillen Story on Netflix and am completely overwhelmed by thoughts, feelings, and emotions. So much so that I felt compelled to share it.

Many people are unaware that when Vanessa was undergoing sexual harassment by her chain of command and murdered in 2020, I had just finished several months of intensive therapy to help cope with and deal with my own military sexual trauma while serving. In 2010, I was assaulted for the first time.

Seeing this documentary now, In 2022, 10 years later, I’m angry and sad because these things affect not only those of us who went through them, but also those who loved us the most.

But I’m also grateful and relieved to know that something is finally being done about the culture and that what Vanessa, myself, and so many others went through before this new legislation was put into place, was not a lie. Because it’s never just been in our heads.

And to anyone who has gone through something like this…I hope you can find the peace you so very much deserve.
