once upon a time, hysteria was a diagnosis given only to women, it's root coming from the latin hystericus, meaning "of the womb" (hence hysterectomy). it was believed to render women erratic and out of control.
while the origin of the world may be forgotten, it's original meaning lingers on in our psyches, leading people to more easily believe women lie, exaggerate or deserve abuse rather than believe that men lie about abusing women.
